How to word it
A card does not need to be clever. The flowers do the talking and the card tells the recipient who they are from and why. Sign with the name the recipient knows you by, and if you are not close, add how they know you.
Our gift message box on checkout takes up to 500 characters, but one to three lines is usually plenty. A handwritten-style message printed on the card reads best when it is short.
Message ideas by occasion
- Birthday: "Happy birthday! Wishing you a day as bright as these. Love, Sam."
- Thank you: "Thank you for everything you did this week. We could not have done it without you."
- New baby: "Congratulations on your beautiful new arrival. Thinking of you all."
- Get well: "Thinking of you and sending lots of love. Hope you are home and feeling better soon."
- Anniversary: "Happy anniversary. Every year with you is better than the last."
- Congratulations: "So proud of you. Well done on your wonderful news!"
- Sympathy: "Thinking of you all at this sad time. With love and sympathy."
- Just because: "No reason, other than you are lovely."
A few things to avoid
Skip "I know how you feel" in a sympathy card, because nobody quite does. Do not mention the price. If the flowers are a surprise, add "Surprise!" rather than your name if you want it anonymous, but remember that the recipient may want to thank you.
Questions we get asked
Can I send flowers anonymously?
Yes. Leave the card unsigned or sign it "A secret admirer". Bear in mind that a recipient who does not know who sent the flowers cannot thank you, so many people add at least a first name.
How long can my message be?
The gift message box at checkout accepts up to 500 characters. A shorter message is easier to read on a small card.
