Check the notice first
Read the death notice or ask a family member before ordering. Many families now write "no flowers by request" or ask for donations to a charity instead. Respect it. If the notice is silent, flowers are welcome.
Where to send them
There are two usual choices. Flowers can go to the funeral director, who will place them at the chapel or take them to the service, or they can go to the family's home. If you are not sure which is better, ring the funeral director: they will tell you the delivery address and the latest time they can accept flowers, which is often the day before or the morning of the service.
Include the name of the person who has died and the date and time of the service in the order notes, so the flowers reach the right place. For a burial or cremation service at a cemetery, check with the cemetery or funeral director first, because some have rules on what can be left.
What to send
White and soft colours are traditional, but there is no rule, and a family who loved bright flowers may prefer them. A few options that are always safe:
- A funeral wreath, which is the most traditional tribute and sits on a stand or against an easel at the service. We make wreaths in Small (32cm), Medium (36cm) and Large (42cm), and an Extra Large (55-65cm) to order by phone.
- A hand-tied bouquet or box arrangement, which suits sending to the family's home and can be enjoyed afterwards.
- A long-lasting potted plant, which gives the family something to keep.
What to write on the card
Keep it short and sincere. "Thinking of you all. With love, Sam and Priya" is enough. Always sign with names the family will recognise, and add your relationship if you are not close ("from your colleagues at ..."). You do not need to say more than you are comfortable saying.
Questions we get asked
How far ahead should funeral flowers be ordered?
Order as soon as you know the service details. We deliver the same day when you order by 1pm, but funeral directors often need flowers a day ahead, so earlier is safer. If the service is soon, call the shop.
Can I send flowers to a funeral if I cannot attend?
Yes. Sending flowers is a common way to show you are thinking of the family when you cannot be there. Add a card with your name so the family knows who they came from.
Are lilies suitable for a funeral?
Yes. White lilies are a traditional funeral flower. Their scent is strong, so for a home or hospital visit a milder arrangement may be kinder.
